well as somebody who was formerly
trained in Pediatrics and practice
medicine for a number of years I used to
Moonlight and neonatal intensive care
units for years I’m very familiar with
uh uh deliveries attended thousands of
deliveries as a pediatrician as well as
the care of the newborn in the first
hours of life and so when you’re talking
about birth injuries there’s a lot of
different areas that that can Encompass
the can be birth injuries that occur
before the child is born in utero there
can be various problems that now can be
diagnosed and intervened earlier there
can be injuries that occur during the
process of birth the most common of
which is thought of as anoxic brain
injury where the baby doesn’t get enough
oxygen in the first few minutes of life
because of a complication or a birth
injury such as a brachial plexus injury
where uh the nerves get damaged in in
the shoulder area of the of the baby
causing an injury to the child’s arm
which can be lifelong and then there’s
of course injuries that occur after
birth a child can come out have H good
apgar scores have normal oxygenation and
things like a Paton ductus arteriosis or
other uh things that can occur during
the first hours and days of life don’t
get timely diagnosed and managed so
birth injuries really in my mind uh
covers a very large range of areas and
you really need an
experienced um expert in in that field

Philadelphia, PA personal injury attorney Leon Aussprung M.D., ESQ. talks about his experience with handling birth injury cases. He shares that he brings a unique perspective to birth injury cases, having been formally trained in pediatrics and practicing medicine for many years. His background included extensive experience moonlighting in neonatal intensive care units and attending thousands of deliveries, giving him a deep understanding of both the birthing process and the critical first hours of a newborn’s life.

When discussing birth injuries, he emphasized that the scope is broad. Injuries may occur in utero, where modern medicine sometimes allows for earlier diagnosis and intervention. They may also arise during delivery, with one of the most concerning being an anoxic brain injury—when the baby does not receive sufficient oxygen in the first minutes of life. Another common example is a brachial plexus injury, where nerves in the shoulder are damaged, potentially causing lifelong impairment of the arm.

Beyond the delivery itself, injuries can also develop after birth. A child may appear healthy with strong Apgar scores and normal oxygenation, yet conditions such as a patent ductus arteriosus or other complications may go undiagnosed or untreated in the early hours or days of life.

In his view, birth injuries encompass a wide spectrum of medical issues, and addressing them effectively requires an experienced and highly skilled expert in the field.
