types of injuries that
00:05
can occur in birth
00:09
in in the birthing process would be one
00:12
of the most severe would be a hypoxic
00:14
ischemic encephalopathy or what we call
00:16
as hie
00:18
and that can occur if during delivery
00:21
the child was deprived of oxygen or
00:24
blood
00:25
and it causes a major brain injury and
00:28
that can happen
00:29
if for example the fetal monitoring
00:31
strips were showing worry some signs
00:34
and the child should have been delivered
00:37
by emergency c-section and that did not
00:40
occur
00:40
and as a result blood flow
00:44
was stifled and did not get to the to
00:46
the brain
00:47
and so the child has a massive brain
00:49
injury i’ve also seen
00:51
cases where the brain injury has
00:54
occurred as a result of
00:56
bleeding they went in to do an
00:57
artificial rupture of membranes
01:00
and when they did so something an
01:03
emergency occurred
01:04
bleeding massive bleeding happened after
01:07
the rupture
01:08
and they did not get the child to
01:10
emergency c-section
01:12
quickly enough and as a result the child
01:14
lost massive amounts of blood
01:16
and therefore sustained a major brain
01:18
injury less severe but still worrying
01:20
some
01:20
is a child can sustain like a brachial
01:22
plexus injury
01:24
and that’s so during the delivery
01:26
through
01:27
a vaginal delivery the physician
01:30
may have pulled on the neck and
01:33
stretched the nerves
01:35
that span between the neck and the
01:36
shoulder and that’s the brachial plexus
01:38
and as a result the child has a
01:41
neurological injury to their arm
01:43
and so they lose the appropriate
01:46
functioning of their arm
01:47
so those are some of the three types of
01:49
injuries we typically see in birth
01:50
injury cases

Baltimore, MD personal injury lawyer Ace McBride talks about the types of birth injury cases he handles. He notes that the types of injuries that can occur during the birthing process vary in severity. One of the most serious is hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, or HIE, which happens when a baby is deprived of oxygen or blood during delivery, resulting in major brain injury. This can occur if fetal monitoring shows concerning signs and an emergency C-section is indicated but not performed, leading to insufficient blood flow to the brain.

He has also seen brain injuries caused by severe bleeding. For example, during an artificial rupture of membranes, an unexpected complication can lead to massive bleeding, and if the child is not delivered by emergency C-section quickly enough, the resulting blood loss can cause a major brain injury.

Less severe but still significant injuries include brachial plexus injuries. During vaginal delivery, if a physician pulls on the baby’s neck, the nerves connecting the neck and shoulder—the brachial plexus—can be stretched, causing neurological injury to the arm and loss of proper function.

These are among the most common types of injuries he encounters in birth injury cases.
