The advantage of hiring the lawyer who tried the case to also handle the appeal is obviously, you don’t have to start from square one with the lawyer who tried the case. That lawyer is intimately involved with the facts and the evidence and the way the case played out in trial and doesn’t need to necessarily go back to a transcript to figure it out. At the same time, if the appeal is very complex or has particular appellate issues, it may be beneficial to the client to maintain trial counsel and also retain separate counsel for the appeal itself and have them work together as a team.
