When a judge is faced with the issue of how long and how much spousal support should be awarded to the part requesting it a court will look at a number of factors. First and foremost, a court will look at the age and health of the part requesting it. A court will also look at the duration of the marriage. How long was the marriage? And when looking at how long the marriage was the court will want to know how did these two parents and live? What was their family lifestyle? Did they live a lavish lifestyle and what did that entail? Were there a lot of vacations? Were there a lot of dinners out? Courts will want the party requesting spouse support to receive an amount that is high enough for a period of time that is long enough to resemble the marital lifestyle that they were used to during the marriage. A court will also look at the party’s respective financial situations and their respective careers. These are things a court will consider when determining how long and how much spousal support should be awarded.
