Spousal support is very interesting in that there’s temporary spousal support and there’s permanent spousal support.
What’s important to know is temporary is from when the petition is filed until the end when judgment is entered.
Permanent is from judgment moving forward. So what the court will look at is a whole host of factors. Family Code
section 4320 goes through those factors so that the court can think about what it is that a person may need to support themselves moving forward.

Los Angeles, CA family law attorney Nina Shayan Depatie talks about how spousal support is calculated. She clarifies that spousal support is divided into two categories: temporary spousal support and permanent spousal support. Temporary spousal support applies from the time the divorce petition is filed until the final judgment is entered, while permanent spousal support begins after judgment and continues moving forward.

She notes that courts evaluate a wide range of factors when determining spousal support, many of which are outlined in California Family Code Section 4320. These factors help the court assess what level of financial support a person may need in order to support themselves after the divorce.
