i think the most memorable case i had
00:06
was i received a call
00:07
from a mother out in western maryland
00:11
her son had been the driver of the
00:13
vehicle
00:14
just about a mile inside the maryland
00:16
west virginia line
00:18
they had been rear-ended by a
00:20
17-year-old
00:21
kid and the
00:24
wife of the woman the moms called me so
00:28
it was her son that was married to the
00:30
deceased
00:32
and when i first took the call the
00:34
question is always
00:36
okay you’re hit by a 17 year old kid how
00:38
much insurance is there
00:40
on the other vehicle do you know no we
00:41
don’t okay how much coverage
00:44
do you have in your own personal vehicle
00:46
and i was told we had full coverage we
00:47
had 50
00:48
000 in coverage so i drove out to
00:50
western maryland and my staff was kind
00:52
of giving me a hard time because they’re
00:53
like
00:54
that’s going to be not a case because
00:57
there’s no insurance coverage
00:58
i was going to do the case pro bono and
01:00
just steer them
01:02
through the insurance process and just
01:04
give them free advice
01:06
when i got out there one of the
01:07
questions was is there any way in the
01:10
world
01:11
that there’s sufficient insurance
01:12
coverage with a 17 year old kid
01:15
and i was told well his grandfather who
01:17
owned the car
01:19
invented the big mac okay
01:22
there’s a real good shot there’s going
01:24
to be additional insurance coverage and
01:25
there was there was a 5 million dollar
01:27
policy that no one
01:28
would even have known about and which
01:30
the insurance company wouldn’t even tell
01:32
us about
01:33
in the beginning and we were able to get
01:35
just a great result
01:36
and a case that i thought was going to
01:38
be a four hour drive to western maryland
01:41
just to give somebody free advice was uh
01:43
one of the more satisfying
01:45
uh cases i’ve ever handled as a result
01:48
of really making a difference in the
01:49
life of
01:50
that husband with a deceased young wife
01:53
and their small child
01:54
it really was a great case from my
01:57
personal
01:57
perspective to handle because the effect
02:00
we were able to have for our particular client

Baltimore, MD personal injury lawyer Rick Jaklitsch tells the story of a memorable wrongful death case he handled. He remembers that one of the most memorable cases of his career. He received a call from a mother in western Maryland whose son had been driving a vehicle just inside the Maryland–West Virginia line when they were rear-ended by a 17-year-old driver. The son’s wife had tragically died in the accident.
When he first took the call, his immediate concern was insurance coverage. The family had full coverage on their own vehicle, but only $50,000, and the other driver was a teenager with limited resources. Initially, he planned to handle the case pro bono, guiding them through the insurance process and providing free advice, thinking there might not be sufficient coverage to pursue a full claim.
Upon investigating further, he discovered that the teenager’s grandfather, the owner of the car, was surprisingly wealthy—he had invented the Big Mac—and had a $5 million insurance policy. This policy had been unknown to the family and initially withheld by the insurance company.
By uncovering this coverage, he was able to achieve an excellent result, far exceeding what anyone had expected. What had started as a simple four-hour drive to offer free guidance became one of the most personally rewarding cases of his career. The outcome made a significant difference in the life of the widowed husband and their small child, and he found great satisfaction in the tangible impact the case had for his client.
