Cleveland, OH criminal defense attorney Jay Milano talks about the most common types of crimes that are labeled “white collar”. He explains that white-collar crimes are primarily fraud—lying to institutions for financial gain—and are almost always money-related offenses. Often, these crimes involve companies. A small company with a great idea can grow explosively, but its internal systems may not keep pace with its rapid expansion. In such cases, a trusted employee may exploit the weaknesses in the system, committing theft or other fraudulent acts. While the company itself isn’t criminally liable, it often lacks the safeguards to prevent such misconduct, and the perpetrator is savvy enough to take advantage.
