Well, in Connecticut, it really depends whether a school is public or private because there are different standards that apply to public schools and private
schools. But generally speaking, um, public schools, private schools, child care centers, religious institutions, they’re all held to the same standard.
And that standard is a standard of reasonable care. Um, so the question then becomes, did someone do what they were supposed to do to either identify a
perpetrator or to adequately supervise to ensure that a perpetrator didn’t have access to children in vulnerable places or just generally to make sure that kids are safe?

Stamford, CT personal injury attorney Paul Slager talks about when an institution can be held liable for sexual abuse. He notes that, in Connecticut, the legal standards applicable to schools may vary depending on whether the institution is public or private. However, he explains that public schools, private schools, childcare centers, and religious institutions are generally held to a standard of reasonable care. He emphasizes that the key issue is whether those responsible took appropriate steps to identify potential perpetrators, provide adequate supervision, and ensure that children were protected from harm and kept safe.
