In a stock sale, the owners of the stock, the shareholders, are selling their shares in the company to someone else. In an asset deal, which is much more common, the company itself is selling its assets and/or certain liabilities to the buyer. So on one, its stockholders selling stock the stock deal, and in the other one, it’s the company selling its assets, an asset purchase agreement, or APA.
