So how are scope concepts similar to headnotes? In the area of legal case law, there are a number of companies that produce what are called headnotes. Those are abstract concepts of rule of law that are brought forward or expounded upon by judges in cases. And so what we do in scope concepts is really to take that same abstracting concept and look for a single line of limitation disclosure and perpetuate that across the whole set of patents that we’re analyzing to discover which ones we can knock out using that similar headnote concept. And we do that not because we’re looking for everything that includes that concept. We’re using that concept to knock everything out.

Minneapolis patent attorney Mark Stignani explains how scope concepts are similar to headnotes.
