the approach really is is to bring on
board whatever folks you’re going to
need to sort out um the the various
assets that you have sometimes we’re
we’ve got closely held businesses uh
that need to be valued and we’ll bring
in a valuation expert sometimes we’re
dealing with a collections of things one
of the things over the years that I ran
into was a Barbie collection uh that a
client of mine had uh an extensive
collection of Barbies ultimately it
valued out at several
hundred,000 but that was kind of an
interesting aspect of things people
collect all sorts of things uh and
sometimes finding the right expert to
value those items uh is a task in itself
but the task at hand really is sorting
out what we have uh determining where
it’s going to go and placing values on
things it’s a dollar and cents uh issue
with the court if we end up in a in a
courthouse situation uh or in a
mediation kind of setting

Everett, WA family law attorney Ken Brewe talks about his approach in handling a property division dispute. He shares that his approach is to engage the appropriate experts needed to assess and organize a client’s assets. For closely held businesses, he may bring in a valuation specialist, while other unique assets—ranging from art collections to collectibles—require experts familiar with their specific market. For example, one client’s extensive Barbie collection was ultimately valued at several hundred thousand dollars, illustrating the diverse nature of assets he encounters.

The primary objective is to identify and categorize assets, determine their allocation, and assign accurate values. This process is essential whether the matter proceeds in court or is resolved through mediation, as precise valuations are critical to achieving fair and enforceable outcomes.
