So complex property is kind of a broad
term and it can refer to a variety of
assets. I would say the ones that we see
most commonly are when one of the
spouses or both hold an ownership
interest in a business that leads to
requiring an expert to well typically to
value uh that ownership interest in the
business entity and then figuring out
how it’s going to be divided. Another
asset that I would consider complex that
we see routinely are restricted stock
units awards that a spouse may get
through their employer. Um, and then you
need to address, you know, the vesting
schedule of those and on which date
they’re valued.
Irvine, CA family law attorney Amanda Beall talks about examples of complex property. She points out that complex property is a broad term that can include a variety of assets. The most common situations she encounters involve one or both spouses holding an ownership interest in a business, which often requires an expert to value that interest and determine how it will be divided.
Another type of complex asset she frequently handles is restricted stock unit (RSU) awards that a spouse may receive through their employer. These require careful attention to the vesting schedule and the specific date on which the stock is valued.
