one of the medical devices that has been
on the market
that has generated a lot of lawsuits are
artificial hip implants
one of the problems is that the
manufacturers have
tended to
skip the regulatory process they’re
allowed to take a shortcut under the
federal regulations
but by taking that shortcut it exposes
them to more liability
unfortunately they’ve just built the
cost of that liability into the cost of
their product
and so there have been a number of
manufacturers
of defective
artificial hips that have been sued
because the devices fail they either
fail because
they’re releasing
metal heavy metals into the person’s
body
or
they
slip out of place
or they
just wear out and so the person has to
undergo a second surgery or a third
surgery and there were thousands of
people across the country in recent
years who experienced those problems
there have been defective heart valves
and defective hearing devices
there have also been defective birth
control devices that women have suffered
very serious side effects and injuries
from so those are the
types of things
that the types of medical devices that
have been subject to a lot of
litigation lawsuits over the years

Austin, TX personal injury attorney Scott Hendler talks about some of the medical devices that have been the subject of lawsuits. He explains that one of the medical devices that has generated significant lawsuits is artificial hip implants. A key issue is that some manufacturers have bypassed portions of the regulatory process, taking shortcuts allowed under federal regulations. While this expedites production, it increases their liability, which manufacturers often factor into the cost of the product.

These defective hip implants have failed in various ways: some release heavy metals into the body, some slip out of place, and others simply wear out, forcing patients to undergo additional surgeries—sometimes a second or even a third procedure. Thousands of people across the country have experienced these problems in recent years.

He notes that the litigation extends beyond hip implants, encompassing defective heart valves, hearing devices, and birth control devices, all of which have caused serious injuries and side effects for patients. These are the types of medical devices that have been the focus of extensive lawsuits over time.
