yes uh absolutely uh I have
handled a number of cases against
several different
manufacturers the industry standard is
that you must not be able to open a
pressure cooker lid when the contents
are pressurized there’s an Underwriters
Laboratory standard that says pressure
cookers must not be able to be opened
they have to have a safety interlock if
they are still under pressure If a
company
is Distributing a pressure cooker that
is able to be opened while it is still
under pressure it is in violation of the
industry standard you must not be able
to do that but there’s a second problem
with some of these pressure cookers
particularly with the Sunbeam
crockpot people have mistakenly put the
lid on 180 degrees opposite of what it’s
supposed to be there’s a place where
you’re supposed to put the lid on and
twist it to lock it if somebody
mistakenly puts that lid on completely
opposite of what it should be 180 Dees
opposite by Design the product should
not pressurize it should recognize that
the lid is not properly placed and not
heat it up to
pressurize however at least with the
Sunbeam that I myself tested I could put
it on 180° opposite of what it should be
and the pot would turn on and heat up as
if it was in the right place the risk of
that happening is because the lid is not
on properly it can blow off uh it can
continue to heat uh I’ve seen a video
where the lid was you
vibrating uh and I had a client where
the lid actually blew off we have it on
video he was walking into the kitchen
because he heard his pot making noise
and boom the lid blew off just as he was
walking up to
it

Denver, CO personal injury attorney George McLaughlin talks about who you can sue for injuries caused by a pressure cooker. He notes that he has handled numerous cases against several different pressure cooker manufacturers. He explains that the industry standard, as defined by Underwriters Laboratories, requires that a pressure cooker lid cannot be opened while the contents are still pressurized. Every pressure cooker must have a safety interlock to prevent opening under pressure. If a manufacturer distributes a cooker that can be opened while pressurized, it is in clear violation of this standard.

He also highlights a separate issue with some models, particularly the Sunbeam Crockpot. If the lid is mistakenly placed 180 degrees opposite of its intended position, the product by design should recognize the error and prevent pressurization. However, in his own testing, he found that certain Sunbeam models would still heat and pressurize even when the lid was improperly placed. This creates a significant risk: the lid can blow off while the cooker is in operation. He recalls a case where a client captured video of the lid violently ejecting just as he approached the pot in the kitchen, demonstrating the real and present danger of this defect.
