So one metric for patent citation ranking that people use is essentially the number of times a patent gets cited in the future is often indicative of the value or importance of that patent. So if a particular patent is referred back to many, many, many times it usually indicates that the patent is considered to be very seminal, you know, teaching in the area or contain seminal teaching. If it’s not referred to at all it often indicates the other, that it’s not that important of a patent, and no one has copied it or followed in the same footsteps.
