00:05
uh an immigrant who’s been a victim of
00:07
crime can’t get a green card
00:09
it’s kind of the notion what was done to
00:12
harm you
00:13
is now helping you so i recall a client
00:17
who
00:18
was a victim of robbery and
00:22
she was an immigrant she lived here you
00:24
just and she
00:25
cooperated with the police and at that
00:28
time she had no idea
00:30
that this robbery was going to help her
00:33
get a green card but what it did was
00:35
allow her to cooperate
00:38
with the police and then get a
00:39
certification that would then lead to
00:42
what’s called a u
00:43
visa which is a little different from
00:45
the violence against women’s act
00:47
and with the u visa she was able
00:51
to then petition for herself to get a
00:54
green card as well

Miami, FL immigration attorney Ruth Jean explains whether or not an immigrant who has been a victim of crime can get a green card. She recalls that an immigrant who has been a victim of a crime may be eligible to obtain a green card. In many ways, what was once a harmful experience can ultimately become a path to protection. She remembers a client who had been the victim of a robbery. The woman, an immigrant living in the United States, cooperated fully with the police without realizing that her cooperation could later benefit her immigration status. Through that cooperation, she obtained a certification that allowed her to apply for a U visa—a form of relief distinct from the Violence Against Women Act. With the U visa, she was ultimately able to petition for and obtain her green card.
