Alexandria, VA criminal defense attorney Chris Leibig talks about the best way to find a violent crimes lawyer. He observes that most criminal cases are typically handled in State Court, though either court may be involved. In his view, there are few true “niches” within criminal defense—for example, there is not a distinct category of lawyers exclusively for rape cases or murder cases. What matters most is finding an attorney with extensive experience managing complex and serious matters across the board.
While some lawyers may develop expertise in certain areas, the priority should be a holistic understanding of the jurisdiction and the procedural nuances of the state. A skilled attorney knows which investigations are necessary, which strategies are ineffective, which pre-trial motions support the overarching case theory, and how to build toward a favorable outcome rather than simply reacting to developments.
Success in high-stakes criminal cases, he emphasizes, comes from formulating a coherent and effective theory of the case that integrates all available evidence, often requiring investigation beyond what the police or prosecutors have uncovered. This type of experience is more significant than simply the number or type of cases handled. He notes that some attorneys may have handled large volumes of cases yet lack the strategic approach necessary for strong results.
He advises clients to take their time when selecting counsel, paying attention to how an attorney discusses cases, their methodology, and their willingness to understand the client’s circumstances rather than treating the matter as a transactional engagement. For serious violent crimes in particular, having an attorney with substantial experience at that level is essential.
