Denver, CO personal injury attorney George McLaughlin talks about recalls for Onewheel Skateboards. He shares that on November 16, 2022, a commissioner of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a public press release on the CPSC website titled “Future Motion Refuses to Recall Deadly One-Wheel Skateboard.” The release strongly advised consumers to immediately stop using all OneWheel electric skateboards, stating unequivocally that “they are not worth dying for.”
The press release highlighted that OneWheel self-balancing electric skateboards posed a serious crash hazard, capable of ejecting riders and causing severe injury or death. At least four fatalities had occurred from traumatic head injuries linked to the product. The CPSC requested that Future Motion stop selling the boards and advise customers not to use them, but the company initially refused to take corrective action to address this hazard.
Eventually, on September 29, 2023, Future Motion issued a recall of all OneWheel self-balancing electric skateboards. The CPSC published the recall under the title “Future Motion Recalls OneWheel Self-Balancing Electric Skateboards Due to Crash Hazard; Four Deaths Reported.” The recall covered all models of the product, noting that the skateboards could lose balance if the board’s limits were exceeded, creating a crash hazard that could result in serious injury or death. The recommended remedy was either a refund or repair.
Future Motion remains in business, but the recall affected approximately 300,000 units. Consumers in possession of a recalled OneWheel are strongly advised to stop using it and return it to the company for a refund or repair. Individuals who have sustained injuries from these skateboards may have legal claims related to the hazard.
