motorcycle crashes are typically
00:07
involve catastrophic injury and the
00:09
biggest problem we have is limited
00:11
insurance coverage so many times people
00:14
have decent insurance coverage on their
00:15
automobile
00:17
they then go and buy a motorcycle their
00:19
carrier doesn’t have
00:21
motorcycle coverage so they go and they
00:23
get minimal coverage
00:24
30 thousand dollars we just had that
00:26
recently in a case
00:28
with this young man 19 years of age got
00:31
a separate insurance policy
00:32
through a carrier for 30 000 in coverage
00:35
he’s lost limbs it’s a terrible accident
00:38
so we have to go find additional
00:40
coverage we were lucky in that case
00:42
it turned out that 19 year old was
00:44
living in his
00:45
permanently in his parents household
00:48
even though he was temporarily
00:49
staying with his grandmother taking care
00:51
of the grandmother so even though no one
00:54
knew it
00:54
because he had been permanently living
00:56
with the parents he was covered under
00:58
the parents policy and we were able to
01:00
find additional hundred thousand dollars
01:03
in coverage
01:04
for that individual so the biggest
01:06
problem is
01:07
finding the coverage and we tell all of
01:09
our clients if you ever
01:11
get on a motorcycle make sure you have
01:13
proper coverage before you pull out of
01:15
your driveway
01:16
the very first time

Baltimore, MD personal injury lawyer Rick Jaklitsch talks about the biggest challenges faced in motorcycle crash cases. He explains that motorcycle crashes often result in catastrophic injuries, and one of the biggest challenges in these cases is limited insurance coverage. Many people have decent coverage for their automobiles but minimal coverage for motorcycles. He recalls a recent case involving a 19-year-old who had only $30,000 in motorcycle insurance. After a severe accident in which he lost limbs, the limited coverage posed a significant problem.
Fortunately, the young man had been permanently living with his parents, even though he was temporarily staying with his grandmother to care for her. Because of this, he was also covered under his parents’ insurance policy, which provided an additional $100,000 in coverage, significantly improving his position in the case.
He emphasizes that the biggest challenge in motorcycle crash cases is securing adequate coverage and advises all clients: if you ever ride a motorcycle, make sure you have proper insurance before pulling out of your driveway for the very first time.
