the most common advice that I give to my
clients is to tell them to be open and
honest with their attorney that is the
number one cornerstone of relationship
between the attorney and the client if
you can be open and honest with your
client and your client can be open and
honest with you you can develop a level
of trust where you can really trust that
you are getting the best representation
possible but also getting the best level
of trust from your client in the
eventually making the right
decision the the biggest Mentor that
I’ve had in my life both personally and
professionally is my father he was
practicing law for 30 plus years before
I even told him I was interested in
going to law school he actually
encouraged me not to go to law school
and to to find my other way in life but
stubborn as I am I followed in his
footsteps as I’ve learned throughout the
last 10 years of my legal career no one
will push you harder than your own
parent especially when you work with
them and it’s because they want to see
you do well and they want to see you
succeed without a doubt my father has
been my greatest Mentor in my practice
of law to date and I’m very thankful for
that

Columbia, SC personal injury attorney Mark D. Chappell Jr. talks about the one most common piece of advice he gives to clients and his mentor in the practice of law. He often advises his clients that the most important foundation of the attorney-client relationship is openness and honesty. When clients are candid with their attorney, and the attorney responds with the same level of transparency, a genuine trust develops. That trust not only ensures the client receives the strongest possible representation but also helps guide them toward making informed and sound decisions in their case.

Reflecting on his own career, he credits his father as both his greatest personal and professional mentor. His father had practiced law for more than three decades before he even expressed interest in attending law school. Initially, his father encouraged him to pursue a different path, but determined to follow his own instincts, he chose to enter the legal profession. Over the past decade, he has learned that no one demands more from you than a parent—particularly one you work alongside. That drive stems from a desire to see their child succeed. Without question, his father has been the most influential mentor in shaping his practice of law, and he remains deeply grateful for that guidance.
