That’s a great story, and the story is simply this. It’s kind of multifaceted, and I’ll try to tell you as quickly as possible. When I was a kid, my mother used to say, “Boy, you argue with a sign post.” What she meant is that I would stand my ground no matter what. I would stand my ground, and that lesson became a really true thing for me because my brother got in trouble in high school fighting over a girl, if you can believe it. He decided to go home, find a gun, and take it back to school. Thankfully, they stopped him.

My mother and father were separated, so we couldn’t afford an attorney at the time. She said, “Son, I can’t help you. You need to go to court by yourself. Take your brother with you.” I was the younger brother. We got to court, and I saw the attorneys up at the bench arguing the case. They called my brother’s name. I stepped up with him and said, “I move to dismiss this case.” The judge looked down over the bench at me and said, “Are you a lawyer?” I said, “No sir, but I’m going to be.” The judge dismissed the case for me, and from that day on, I was kind of known as the family guy that could answer questions.

Now, not yours, but I realized that the reason I became a lawyer is that I love helping people. Even if they’re in trouble, or there’s something to do, when people come into my office, they always come in with a little bit of a burden. That’s why they come to a law office. You can kind of see that effect on them when they come in. My joy is when they leave my office, and that burden is gone. They seem lighter, more educated about it, and to me, that makes me feel really good at the end of the day. Perhaps I said something or did something, or gave them an insight to something that really helped them, and that idea of helping someone really turns me on.

St. Louis, MO personal injury attorney Herman Jimerson talks about why he became a lawyer and the most rewarding aspect of his practice. Herman’s journey into law began with a childhood lesson from his mother. She often said, “Boy, you argue with a signpost,” meaning that he would stand his ground, no matter the situation. This lesson stayed with him throughout his life, especially when his brother found himself in trouble during high school over a girl. In a moment of frustration, his brother decided to get a gun and bring it back to school. Thankfully, he was stopped before anything tragic happened.

At that time, Herman’s parents were separated and they couldn’t afford an attorney. Herman’s mother, unable to help financially, told him, “Son, I can’t help you. You need to go to court by yourself. Take your brother with you.” Herman, being the younger sibling, accompanied his brother to court. While there, he observed attorneys arguing the case, and when his brother’s name was called, Herman stepped forward and boldly said, “I move to dismiss this case.” The judge looked down at him and asked, “Are you a lawyer?” Herman replied, “No, sir, but I’m going to be.” The judge dismissed the case, and from that moment on, Herman became known in his family as the one who could answer legal questions.

It was in that moment that Herman realized his calling to become a lawyer. He knew that he wanted to help people, especially those who found themselves in trouble. For Herman, the most rewarding part of his practice is seeing the burden lifted from his clients. He knows that when people walk into his office, they carry some kind of emotional or legal burden. But when they leave, they are often lighter and more educated about their situation. This transformation is what drives Herman. He finds joy in knowing that his guidance or insight may have helped someone navigate a difficult time in their lives.

At the end of the day, it’s the satisfaction of helping others that truly motivates Herman in his work as a personal injury attorney. Whether it’s providing legal expertise, offering a sense of relief, or simply giving someone the confidence they need to move forward, Herman is passionate about using his skills to make a real difference in the lives of his clients.
