The philosophy that guides my work as a
lawyer is legal realism. The idea that
the law should rely on empirical
evidence and that you’ve got to test
hypotheses against observations in the
real world. Legal realism with its focus
on the practical application of law
informs and enhances my transactional
law practice in a number of ways. One,
it helps me understand the practical
context of the matters that I handle,
the market dynamics, the client’s
business needs, giving me a practical
way to focus on the clients and their
objectives, helping clients to craft
agreements that align with their
business goals rather just adhering to
standard legal forms. Legal realism
helps my law practice in negotiation
skills. Beyond legal texts, realism
emphasizes the importance of skills and
understanding the interests of all
parties involved in a negotiation. A
successful transactional lawyer will use
this insight to navigate negotiations
effectively, like I do for my clients,
finding creative solutions that satisfy
the parties to the matter. Legal realism
also gives me flexibility and
adaptability, teaching me to be flexible
and adaptable in my approach in
negotiations and adjusting strategies
based on evolving circumstances and the
participation of other parties.
I’ve served on boards and held
leadership positions in the bar and in
my community since I began practicing
law over 20 years ago. I co-founded the
Bar Association of San Francisco
Cannabis Law Section and I’m the
immediate past chair of that section. I
co-founded the California Lawyers
Association cannabis practitioners group
and I’m the current chair of that group.
I’m also a member of the board of
directors of the International Cannabis
Bar Association and I’ve served on the
executive committee of that
organization’s board. In 2023, the City
and County of San Francisco Board of
Supervisors appointed me to a seat on
the San Francisco Cannabis Oversight
Committee. The seat that I was appointed
to is for an expert in cannabis laws and
regulation. And from this seat, I helped
foster a robust public conversation
about reforms to the cannabis laws in
San Francisco. I’ve also served as a
member of the corporations committee of
the California lawyers association
business law section.
