I get to help people uh and see the
immediate rewards of of that help that I
give to them I have clients that still
send me holiday cards send me text
messages wishing me well they’re just
very thankful I you know I was there for
them you know trying to be that person
they could that can give them objective
advice and navigate them through a
really you know difficult period but you
know also be there to to support them
and and make sure that we get the best
outcome for them and there’s not a lot
of areas in the legal profession that
gets the kind of or has that kind of
impact on uh with clients that that that
we do as part of our family law
practice the advice that I often give to
clients is essentially to follow the
Golden Rule treat others how you want to
be treated I think it’s very easy
because of the acrimony sometimes in a
family law matter for parties to really
get uh entrenched in the you know
continued bickering and fighting and I
try to tell people that that time’s kind
of over and they really just need to
take the high road while the case is
going on because uh honestly it’s for
their own mental health and actually
even for the outcome in the case it can
help a lot so just trying to have people
keep things even keeled and try to keep
the emotions leveled and uh try to avoid
uh you know that high conflict that that
often occurs in
cases it was interesting what what
really wound up preparing me for this
practice was that I didn’t anticipate
going into family law I have a finance
background and uh and then uh when I was
in law school I also received my masters
uh from the business school and with the
focus on additional Finance and
Accounting classes um I went to work for
what was one of the big now it’s one of
the big four accounting firms doing
state and local tax Consulting and had
an opportunity to do a lot of tax
compliance work and so it was a natural
fit for me when I came into the to the
family law practice to really start
working on some large complex cases in
the support role for our senior Partners
I was able to look at financials review
tax returns and really kind of dig in uh
which most law students coming out don’t
that’s something they would take years
to learn on the job and I already had
that exposure from my previous education
experience

Portland, OR family law attorney Zach Fruchtengarten talks about the most rewarding aspect of his practice, the most common piece of advice he gives to clients, and his background & experience. He finds one of the most rewarding aspects of practicing family law to be the ability to help people and witness the immediate impact of that assistance. Many clients remain in touch long after their cases conclude, sending holiday cards or messages of gratitude. They appreciate that he was there to provide objective advice, guide them through a difficult time, and support them in securing the best possible outcome. Few areas of law, he notes, allow attorneys to have that kind of lasting personal impact on their clients.

He frequently advises clients to follow the Golden Rule—treat others as they would want to be treated. Because family law cases often involve high levels of conflict, he stresses the importance of avoiding entrenched disputes and unnecessary hostility. By encouraging clients to take the high road, he helps them preserve their mental well-being and improve the chances of achieving a favorable resolution. Maintaining an even temperament, he explains, benefits both the client and the outcome of the case.

Interestingly, his path to family law was not what he originally anticipated. With a strong background in finance, he earned both his law degree and a master’s degree in business, concentrating on finance and accounting. Before entering family law, he worked at a major accounting firm, focusing on state and local tax consulting and compliance. That experience provided him with advanced exposure to financial analysis and tax matters, giving him skills that most new attorneys take years to acquire. When he transitioned into family law, those skills allowed him to contribute immediately to complex cases, reviewing financial records, analyzing tax returns, and supporting senior partners on high-stakes matters.
