00:04
growing up i always did music and
00:06
theater which is
00:08
completely different than the practice
00:10
of law but i’ve always enjoyed public
00:12
speaking and
00:14
working with individuals and so when i
00:17
made the transition and decided i wanted
00:18
to be an attorney i
00:20
also worked with children with special
00:22
needs at that time and so because of my
00:25
background working with children in the
00:27
foster care system as well as children
00:29
with special needs i kind of fell into
00:31
the family law field because i realized
00:34
that there was a great need for families
00:37
to have quality
00:39
representation when they’re going
00:40
through a family case
00:42
and then when i was in law school i
00:44
did clinic work for the family law
00:46
clinic at my law school i won most
00:49
outstanding clinic student for my work
00:50
in the
00:52
family law clinic and i also worked for
00:54
the public defender’s office where i
00:56
gained all of my experience
00:59
during law school in the criminal
01:00
defense field and i did everything from
01:04
sexual assaults to murder cases and i
01:07
was actually second chairing murder
01:09
trials when i was in law school and so
01:11
that’s where my experience comes and how
01:14
i kind of got into the areas of family
01:16
law and criminal defense
01:19
[Music]
01:23
so if you are hiring a board-certified
01:26
attorney uh for instance in family law
01:29
i’m board-certified in family law you
01:31
know that you’re getting an attorney
01:33
that has
01:34
a lot of experience in that area and
01:36
they’ve been tested in that area so to
01:38
speak and what i mean by that is
01:41
there’s about 110 000 lawyers in the
01:43
state of texas and only about 7 100 of
01:46
them are
01:47
board certified in a specific area it’s
01:50
about 6 percent of attorneys
01:52
you have to have been practicing for at
01:54
least five years
01:56
you have to have a certain percentage of
01:57
your practice in that specific area you
02:00
have to have letters of recommendation
02:02
from other attorneys and judges who
02:04
you’ve worked with
02:05
on
02:06
matters in that area of law
02:08
you have to have had so many jury trials
02:11
so many types of appeals
02:13
so many different types of cases within
02:15
that
02:16
specific area and then ultimately you
02:18
also have to have
02:20
the continuing legal education in that
02:22
area and you have to take a test too to
02:25
get board certified and then every five
02:27
years you have what’s called
02:28
recertification
02:30
where they basically verify that you’re
02:32
still
02:33
keeping up to date in that specific
02:35
field so when you hire a board certified
02:37
attorney you know that you’re getting
02:39
somebody
02:40
that is an expert in that specific area
02:43
of law not just the law in general

Austin, TX family law attorney Tyler Pennington shares his background & experience and explains what it means to be a board-certified in family law. He shares that he grew up immersed in music and theater, a world far removed from the practice of law, but it instilled in him a love for public speaking and working closely with people. When he decided to pursue a legal career, he also spent time working with children with special needs and in the foster care system. That experience naturally led him to family law, as he recognized a strong need for families to have quality representation during challenging times.

During law school, he excelled in clinic work for the family law clinic, earning recognition as the most outstanding clinic student. He also gained extensive experience in criminal defense while working for the public defender’s office, handling cases ranging from sexual assault to murder, even serving as second chair on murder trials while still a student. These experiences shaped his dual expertise in family law and criminal defense.

As a board-certified family law attorney, he emphasizes the value of hiring someone with verified expertise. Out of roughly 110,000 lawyers in Texas, only about 7,100—around 6 percent—are board-certified in a specific area. Board certification requires at least five years of practice, a significant portion of work in the specialty, letters of recommendation from attorneys and judges, experience in jury trials, appeals, and other relevant cases, as well as continuing legal education and a rigorous exam. Every five years, recertification ensures that attorneys remain up to date in their field. When clients hire a board-certified attorney like him, they are getting a proven expert in that specific area of law, not just a general practitioner.
