to me the most rewarding aspect
00:06
of practicing family law is being able
00:09
to advocate for families and for
00:11
children
00:12
whether that’s advocating for parental
00:14
rights through an appellate case
00:16
or advocating for children and parents
00:18
in a cps case
00:20
or representing children or parents who
00:22
are victims
00:23
of domestic violence being able to
00:26
advocate
00:27
for people who do not have the ability
00:29
to advocate for themselves
00:31
and using that advocacy to keep them
00:34
safe or benefit their lives in some way
00:37

Dallas, TX family law attorney Shmyla Alam talks about the most rewarding aspect of her practice as well as what she does outside of the office. She shares that to her, the most rewarding aspect of practicing family law is the ability to advocate for families and children. Whether she is fighting for parental rights in an appellate case, representing children and parents in a CPS matter, or assisting victims of domestic violence, she finds fulfillment in standing up for those who cannot advocate for themselves. Using her advocacy to protect, support, and improve the lives of others is what she considers the heart of her work in family law.

Even when not practicing, she remains a bit of a law nerd. She dedicates part of her time as an adjunct professor at the University of North Texas Dallas College of Law, teaching and giving back to the community. She also coaches moot court for the law school. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys traveling and spending time with her two dogs, Rory and Arlo, who keep her active and engaged.
