The word that I use that guides me as an
attorney is
honesty. I don’t want people to come to
this office so that I can tell them what
they already want to hear or what they
think they should know. I want to be
honest with them about the case that
they have. I want to be honest with them
about the cost, both emotional,
physical, and financial. And I want to
be honest with them about outcomes and
the potentials. Especially in family law
where everything is balanced and equity
and there’s always this idea of
fairness. Honesty is really the better
approach to all answers. It may not be
what you want to hear at the time, but
at least the first person telling you
the answer, the honest answer is me as
your lawyer and not the court when
you’re finding out the decision. I don’t
want anybody to be ever shocked by an
outcome. So, if you approach every
question or every case with
honesty, the outcome is always going to
be predetermined and the client’s going
to trust you and trust the

process. For me, the most rewarding
aspect of working as a family law
attorney is working with good people in
bad situations. The folks that come in
to see us are daily representatives of
just our community at large. They’re
just in a tough spot at that time. So
when I meet with them initially, they’re
in the times of their life that they
don’t ever want to relive again. And at
the end of the case, they’re in
sometimes the best position they’ve ever
been in. So watching someone work
through that and helping them guide them
through the law, the equities, the court
system gives me an opportunity to really
meet some really great people and get
them to a position where they feel
really great about themselves again. And
I love that.

Everett, WA family law attorney Sabrina Layman talks about the philosophy that guides her work and the most rewarding aspect of her practice. She shares that her personal guiding principle is honesty. Clients are not met with what they want to hear or what they assume they should know; instead, they receive a clear and truthful assessment of their case.
