Houston, TX family law attorney Rachel Sedita discusses the most rewarding aspect of her practice as well as her mentors and what she learned from them. She shares that one of the things she loves most about practicing law, especially in family law, is that in a very real way, she helps people. Unlike other areas of law, which often involve banks or companies, family law affects everyone, and she truly can help any person who comes to the firm. Most clients are going through a difficult time, with very few exceptions, and there are often many emotional issues involved. Clients may feel insecure about the future or face financial uncertainties, and she helps them navigate through this period. While there are limitations on what she can accomplish, she is committed to guiding clients to the best possible outcome on the other side.
She feels very fortunate to have had several mentors in practicing law, including Cindy Diggs and Judy Sadler, both of whom have been instrumental in her development. She has been with Holmes Diggs and Sadler since before becoming a lawyer, starting in law school. Cindy emphasizes giving young associates responsibility, ownership of cases, and, importantly, credit for their work. She also had the opportunity to work closely with Judy Sadler, who taught her how to work with clients, try cases, and present evidence. Both women significantly shaped her into the lawyer she is today.
The firm is excellent at promoting young attorneys, fostering a culture where individual success reflects the success of mentors and colleagues alike. To this day, when she faces a challenge or wants to discuss an issue, she can easily reach out to other attorneys for guidance or to bounce ideas off them. This collaborative environment is one of the qualities that sets the firm apart.
