I repeatedly find myself telling clients that you can’t believe everything on the internet, especially in Texas because you own your property with your spouse just because they have passed away and you were both on, for example, the deed to the house that does not automatically mean the house is yours. There are steps that you have to take, and depending upon the decedent’s situation, there might be a situation where the surviving spouse does not entirely own that house anymore.

So, I am one of probably about 10 percent of all attorneys in the state of Texas who is board certified. My board certification is in the area of Estate Planning and probate. This is something I chose to do was kind of an extra on top of my license. Not every attorney chooses to do this. I spent a lot of time studying, and I took a specialized exam to receive that certification, and I actually have to take additional continuing education every year beyond the minimum requirements for all attorneys. So I am one of those people who I would like to say is an expert in the area of Estate Planning and probate just due to my additional knowledge that others don’t necessarily have.
