00:04
so i’ve been really lucky to have a lot
00:06
of mentors actually in my law career so
00:09
far
00:10
starting back in law school i interned
00:13
for a medical legal partnership and the
00:16
woman who ran that program at the time
00:18
ended up becoming a really helpful
00:20
mentor to me and sort of taught me some
00:22
things as a as a female in the legal
00:24
profession about how to advocate for
00:26
myself you know negotiate things moving
00:28
forward in my career to this day i still
00:31
turn to her if i have questions about
00:33
things and then kind of going beyond
00:34
that i clerked for a judge he was
00:37
really good about taking the time to sit
00:39
down and explain things to me as a new
00:41
lawyer when you kind of know some things
00:44
but not really
00:46
that much and his big saying was let’s
00:48
look at the statute what does this
00:49
statute say and i hear his voice in my
00:51
head when i’m like well let’s go look at
00:52
the statute and see what that says all
00:54
the way up till i
00:56
moved to st louis in 2015 and met martha
00:59
she’s been an excellent mentor to me
01:01
she’s very good and cares very much
01:03
about bringing up sort of the next
01:06
generation of lawyers so
01:12
in my work i try to
01:14
always have some
01:16
scholarly interest in
01:19
either writing and or speaking
01:21
engagement so generally at the beginning
01:22
of the year i will set a goal for myself
01:25
on a certain number of speaking
01:28
engagements for you per year and i like
01:30
to do speaking engagements that are
01:32
related to elder law but sort of bring
01:34
in
01:35
other aspects of law so how can elder
01:38
law be applicable to
01:40
family lawyers for example or personal
01:42
injury attorneys and that kind of thing
01:44
so i do
01:46
speak to people who practice in the same
01:48
area but also others i’m also involved
01:51
in several
01:52
um scholarly writing endeavors so martha
01:56
and i are actually co-authors on um a
01:59
book that’s put out by the missouri bar
02:02
on guardianships and conservatorships in
02:04
missouri we also co-authored a chapter
02:07
in an elder law guidebook that the
02:09
missouri bar puts out on guardianships
02:11
and conservatorships and in that same
02:13
guidebook alicia and i are actually
02:15
co-authors on a chapter about mo
02:17
healthnet or missouri’s medicaid program
02:19
and in addition to that martha and i are
02:22
co-authors on a book that is put out by
02:24
thomson reuters every year on the whole
02:27
practice of elder law

St. Louis, MO estate & probate attorney Nikki Mitchell talks about her mentors in the practice of law as well as her scholarly work. She considers herself incredibly fortunate to have had many mentors throughout her legal career. Her first major influence came during law school, when she interned for a medical-legal partnership. The woman who led that program became a lasting mentor, teaching her how to advocate for herself as a woman in the legal profession and how to navigate career negotiations with confidence. Even now, she continues to turn to that mentor for guidance. Later, during her clerkship with a judge, she gained invaluable insight into the practical side of the law. He often reminded her to “look at the statute,” a lesson that has stayed with her throughout her practice. When she moved to St. Louis in 2015, she met Martha, another key mentor who has been instrumental in shaping her professional development. Martha’s dedication to mentoring young lawyers inspired her to do the same, supporting and guiding the next generation in her own work.

In addition to her legal practice, she maintains a strong scholarly focus through writing and speaking engagements. Each year, she sets personal goals for the number of presentations she aims to give, often connecting elder law with other practice areas such as family law and personal injury. She also contributes to several publications for the Missouri Bar, co-authoring a book on guardianships and conservatorships in Missouri with Martha, as well as chapters in the Missouri Bar’s Elder Law Guidebook on guardianships, conservatorships, and Missouri’s Medicaid program (MO HealthNet). In addition, she and Martha co-author an annual elder law treatise published by Thomson Reuters, further demonstrating her commitment to advancing legal scholarship and educating her peers.
