i decided to become a lawyer and a
criminal defense lawyer in particular uh
when one of my very good friends
brothers was accused of murder and
watching his family go through that
process
and he went to trial and was eventually
acquitted but watching them navigate the
process and the stress that that put on
that family i decided that’s i wanted to
help people through that process
the most common piece of advice i
probably give my clients is to stop
talking usually if the police or the
state or the federal government think
you’ve done something wrong they’re
trying to build a case against you and
so even though a lot of times people
think they’re going to talk their way
out of trouble it usually ends up making
the case worse

Atlanta, GA criminal defense attorney Leigh S. Schrope shares why she became a lawyer and the one piece of advice she repeatedly gives to her clients. She shares that she decided to become a lawyer, and specifically a criminal defense attorney, after one of her close friend’s brothers was accused of murder. Observing the family navigate the legal system and witnessing the immense stress it placed on them, she resolved that she wanted to help others through similar experiences. The most common piece of advice she gives her clients is to stop talking. When law enforcement or the state believes someone has committed a crime, they are building a case, and attempting to talk one’s way out often worsens the situation rather than improving it.
