I’ve wanted to be a criminal defense
lawyer since I was 14 years old I know
that because a teacher once had a class
his Home Room class do an essay about
what you want to do when you grow up and
this was in the 60s people said I want
to be an airline pilot or a major league
baseball player I wanted to be a
criminal defense lawyer since the age of
14
and what really I like about it is ex
achieving the client’s goals if it’s a
jury trial or a jury waved trial that a
client wants I’ve done over
250 major criminal cases in the superior
court and the federal court and at the
end of a case however it turns out I
always leave as a friend of my client
my father used to say when I was growing
up self-praise is no Praise In fact it
gots to be such a a cardinal fact of my
upgrowth that we called it SP is no P so
I’m a little uncomfortable but I’ll tell
you what means the most to me I’m a
member of the American College of trial
lawyers which is the most prestigious
Organization for trial lawyers in the
United States for 20 years I was
co-chair of the mass Association of
criminal defense lawyers Strike Force
and I was the one who most often was
called when a lawyer was facing contempt
or some other pressure that’s improper
on him for 24 years I was on the
judicial nominating commission under
five different governors
this is a real appreciative value of
having me on that uh very high honor and
finally recently I uh was in the second
group admitted to the Massachusetts
lawyers Hall of Fame

Boston, MA criminal defense attorney J. W. Carney Jr. talks about why he became a lawyer and covers his honors and awards. He shares that he aspired to be a criminal defense lawyer since the age of 14, recalling an assignment in his homeroom class where students wrote essays about their future careers. While many of his classmates dreamed of becoming airline pilots or professional athletes, he knew from that age that he wanted to practice criminal defense law.

What he finds most rewarding is achieving his clients’ goals, whether in a jury trial or a jury-waived trial. Regardless of the outcome, he strives to maintain a positive, professional relationship, leaving every case as a friend and advocate for his client.

He is a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the most prestigious organization for trial lawyers in the United States.
