I don’t really have any idea why I went
to law school I was working as a waiter
after college I didn’t really know what
else I wanted to do I decided to go to
law school I didn’t really get energized
for any kind of particular law work
until I clerked at the DC public
defender service after my first year of
law school and I just loved it ever
since then I knew that’s what I wanted
to do was to be a defense attorney I
started out as a Public Defense in
Alexandria and did that for about six
years and then went into private
practice about 20 years
ago it’s hard to think of one piece of
advice but I think this manifests across
different kinds of advice but one of
them is to take care of themselves to
the extent possible try to relax don’t
make Rush decisions um process all the
information take some time to do it let
your guard down with your lawyer but
really really get with the people you
need to to make smart decisions that are
well thought through as I would be a lot
of people come in very upset impulsive
angry um and such and over the long haul
you have to make the correct choices
listen to the right people process the
information and do the right thing what
matters is your life the long run that
advice can manifest different
differently depending on how someone is
is acting but that’s what helps clients
to help themselves

Alexandria, VA criminal defense attorney Chris Leibig talks about why he became a lawyer and shares his most common advice to clients. He recalls that he initially had little direction after college and was working as a waiter when he decided to attend law school. It was not until he clerked at the D.C. Public Defender Service after his first year that he discovered his passion for criminal defense. From that point, he knew he wanted to be a defense attorney. He began his career as a public defender in Alexandria, serving in that role for approximately six years, before transitioning to private practice around twenty years ago.

When advising clients, he emphasizes the importance of taking care of themselves and making thoughtful decisions. He encourages clients to remain calm, avoid impulsive actions, and carefully process all available information. He stresses the value of trusting their attorney and consulting with the appropriate people to ensure decisions are deliberate and well-informed. Many clients initially approach the process upset, angry, or reactive, but he guides them to focus on long-term outcomes and to make choices that protect their future. According to him, this measured approach is key to helping clients effectively navigate the challenges they face.
