i really enjoy the aspect of helping
people
i mostly represent people who get sued
and they’re often in a
predicament that they never expected to
be faced with
i can not only help them understand the
process
uh but i fortunately have been able to
successfully depend
people who in my opinion were wrong
wrongfully accused
i enjoy the intellectual challenges
i’ve had some very fascinating cases
handled cases of first impression
that get taken to the appellate courts
tried
probably over 150 jury trials uh had
more than 50 appellate cases and through
all that
i think i’ve developed the skills that
give me confidence and
have helped me to be successful i have
experienced some
enormous client appreciation they
returned to me to help them with
successive problems
i had an incident back in 2002 where i
represented a general contractor
who was a really stand-up guy
his project had a terrible accident
where
at least three people were killed and
the number of people were injured and
over a period of year and a half we
negotiated settlements in all of those
cases
without ever going to trial without ever
filing a lawsuit
he calls me every year on the day of
that accident
and thanks me for saving his company
i began to think about becoming a lawyer
when i was in undergraduate school i was
studying in electrical engineering
i realized that in the profession i was
about to embark on that
contracts would be important knowledge
of the law would be important
i debated between law school and
an mba program turns out my best friend
in undergraduate school was applying to
law school
we talked about it and i decided to do
that
we were both accepted to the same law
school i found that
becoming a lawyer gave me the ability to
be
independent and self-sufficient and that
was important to me
well i’ve been fortunate to uh be
recognized
by a number of organizations for my
professional accomplishments i’m most
proud of being
asked to be a fellow of the american
college of trial lawyers
that’s an organization that you enter
not
by applying but only by invitation after
a quite lengthy process
of them investigating your trial
experience your professionalism and your
skill
without your knowledge and then you get
the call and it’s a very
uh surprising honor i also
had the privilege of being awarded a
shared
award in 1996 by the maryland bar
foundation
an award for professional excellence i
shared that with two other lawyers
we worked on what they called the
russell commission at the time
and that was a commission that studied
the drug crisis and underfunding of the
courts
i met some extraordinary people during
that process
and it led to the development of drug
treatment courts
in most of the counties in our state
later in 2007
the power association of baltimore city
awarded me the charles dorsey mentoring
award
one of my favorite pastimes is mentoring
other lawyers
in 2016 i received the
daily record leadership in law award
i was one of probably about
50 lawyers who got different different
awards in different fields
