00:04
so i became a lawyer because i want to
00:06
make a difference in people’s lives
00:08
and i didn’t know exactly how i was
00:10
going to do that but after law school i
00:13
was brand new out of law school and my
00:14
father was involved in a lawsuit
00:16
essentially his business partners had
00:18
shut him out of a deal locked the doors
00:20
and started operating a new business
00:22
basically you know stole the business
00:24
out from under him and he filed a
00:26
lawsuit
00:27
i went to that trial and i didn’t know
00:28
anything i was fresh out of law school
00:29
but um
00:31
in my opinion that attorney did a
00:32
terrible job at trial and as a result
00:35
what i thought were really good claims
00:38
uh ended up being poured out by the jury
00:40
he didn’t win a single dime and as a
00:42
result you know he suffered uh
00:45
physically his health suffered and for
00:47
the rest of his days his livelihood was
00:49
affected and his his quality of life was
00:51
just not as good as it could have been
00:53
uh if his claims were successfully
00:55
prosecuted and that’s when i really got
00:56
the passion for commercial litigation
00:59
because
01:00
business is personal and our cases are
01:03
often make or break high stakes cases
01:05
involving businesses where it’s a real
01:07
world tangible benefit to our clients uh
01:11
you know when we win and it’s going to
01:12
make a big difference to those clients
01:15
whether or not that case is successfully
01:16
handled so that’s that’s why i got into
01:18
the law to make a difference in that
01:20
area
01:21
[Music]
01:26
i have a thirst for knowledge and in our
01:28
in commercial litigation we are able to
01:31
grab on to whole new fact patterns for
01:33
each case and really sink our teeth into
01:35
it and become an expert in a variety of
01:37
different cases you know i had a case
01:39
involving um the faa and jet engines and
01:42
i got to learn everything about the faa
01:44
and jet engines and that whole industry
01:46
you know i have another case involving a
01:48
health care home health care business i
01:50
got to really learn all the facts and
01:51
law related to those different
01:53
industries and so it’s uh being a
01:56
detective you know solving a mystery
01:58
figuring out what the facts are about in
01:59
each individual case and then
02:02
after you’ve
02:03
figured out all that being able to
02:05
decipher it and filter it so it’s a
02:07
persuasive story for a jury and just
02:10
being able to simplify everything and
02:11
tell that story for a jury is is just is
02:14
very rewarding
02:20
so a successful trial lawyer in my
02:22
opinion is someone who can fully grasp
02:24
all the details about your case so you
02:27
want someone who is uh curious and asks
02:30
the right question and gets to the real
02:31
meat of the matter once they’ve seen you
02:33
know all the leaves of that forest they
02:35
need to be able to take a step back and
02:38
look at it like a judge or jury would
02:39
and be able to persuade the judge or a
02:42
jury about that case in a simple and
02:44
simple way so they need to construct a
02:46
narrative that’s persuasive that’s
02:48
compelling that gives the jury or the
02:50
judge a reason why emotionally they
02:52
should vote for uh for your case you
02:54
know being able to listen being able to
02:56
take it all in and be able to ask those
02:58
searing questions and think on your feet
03:00
um
03:01
is really important
03:04
[Music]
03:08
so when i’m not practicing law which is
03:10
which is rare
03:11
but when i have some time off i love to
03:13
spend time with my son he’s just a
03:15
toddler so
03:16
but he loves being outside if he could
03:18
just be outside all day every day it
03:20
would it would be his best life so i
03:22
love spending time with him you know
03:23
chasing him around and and trying to
03:26
take rocks out of his mouth and
03:28
stuff like that so uh spending time with
03:30
him you know trying out new restaurants
03:33
is great
03:34
and i love live music
03:36
and austin is a great place for that as
03:38
well so that’s what i like to do outside
03:40
the office

Austin, TX commercial litigation attorney John R. McConnell talks about why he became a lawyer, what it takes to be successful in the courtroom and more. He shares that he becomes a lawyer because he wants to make a real difference in people’s lives. Early in his career, fresh out of law school, his father becomes involved in a lawsuit after being shut out of his own business by his partners. They lock him out, start operating a new company, and essentially steal the business from him. He attends that trial—completely new to the practice of law—and watches as his father’s attorney, in his opinion, mishandles the case. What he believes to be strong, valid claims end up dismissed by the jury. His father wins nothing, and the loss takes a toll on his health, livelihood, and quality of life.

That experience lights a fire in him. It’s what drives his passion for commercial litigation—because to him, business is personal. The cases he takes on are often high-stakes, make-or-break situations for clients whose futures depend on the outcome. When those cases are handled successfully, the impact is immediate and meaningful, and that’s what motivates him every day.

He also finds fulfillment in the intellectual challenge of commercial litigation. Each case presents a new set of facts and a new industry to learn. One case might involve the FAA and jet engines, while another might focus on home health care operations. He enjoys diving deep into each matter, uncovering the facts like a detective, understanding the complexities, and then distilling it all into a clear, persuasive story for a jury. For him, the most rewarding part of trial work is simplifying complicated issues so a judge or jury can understand and connect with them.

He believes a successful trial lawyer must be deeply curious, able to ask the right questions, and capable of grasping every detail of a case. Once all the facts are understood, a good lawyer must step back and view the case from the perspective of a judge or jury—constructing a narrative that’s both logical and emotionally compelling. Strong advocacy, in his view, comes from careful listening, quick thinking, and the ability to tell a story that resonates on a human level.

Outside the office—which he admits is rare—he cherishes spending time with his young son. His toddler loves being outdoors, so most of their time together involves chasing him around and keeping him out of mischief. When he’s not on dad duty, he enjoys trying new restaurants and experiencing live music—something Austin offers in abundance.
