So, right out of law school in New York,
I came down to South Florida and joined
the Palm Beach County Public Defender
Office. And when you join the public
defenders office, you are thrown right
into the fire. And I would not trade
anything for that experience I had
there. I started off in appeals, which
was invaluable. That office that I was
at in Palm Beach required you to spend
three months in appeals because in
appeals you are on a fast rapid track to
learning objections, learning the black
letter of the law. And from there, once
you’ve completed your 3 months, I’m
going right into a trial division. I’m
trying cases on a weekly basis, uh
sometimes truly for a month, and I’m in
the trenches. I’m learning how to manage
a high case load. I’m trying cases that
vary in the beginning from domestic
violence all the way up to homicide.
Okay? And I’m there for three years. So,
I moved up quickly. I gained a lot of
experience in my time at the Palm Beach
County Public Defenders Office, which is
truly invaluable as far as how I
developed my litigation skills, fighting
the fight there, fighting for society’s
uh individuals who really need that
representation. They need that person as
much as they need that lawyer. Um, and
from there I ultimately decided to go
into private practice.
The types of cases that I’m handling now
are all high stakes, but they vary
within the federal criminal justice
system. And this varies from largecale
drug trafficking cases to healthc care
fraud, securities fraud, wire fraud, all
variations of conspiracy, money
laundering transactions. basically the
gamut of cases that can be brought in
federal court whether they’re white
collar or not. Now certainly I do have a
focus on white collar but I do many
cases that are within the sex crime
realm cyber crimes. So really across the
board but with a focus on white collar
and on health care securities and
cryptocurrency in particular. Now, as
I’m approaching these cases, whether
it’s a drug cartel, very largecale drug
trafficking, or a Ponzi scheme with
securities related, or a healthc care
fraud, every case I am looking from a
litigation forward and trial preparation
perspective, if I look forward to trial
and I think about the end of the case
and work backwards, I’m not going to
miss anything. Every stone is going to
be turned over. I’m going to know what
motions need to be filed and so I think
about trial and work back and that means
that the client is going to be covered
from all angles and get a full wholesome
approach to the case.
Boca Raton, FL criminal defense attorney David Tarras talks about his path from public defender to leading federal defense attorney. He states that after graduating from law school in New York, he began his career at the Palm Beach County Public Defender’s Office in South Florida. The role immediately placed him in the courtroom, an experience he considers invaluable. He started in the appeals division, where a three-month rotation provided rapid training in objections and black-letter law. From there, he transitioned into trial work, handling cases on a weekly basis. Over three years, he managed a heavy caseload that ranged from domestic violence matters to homicide, gaining significant trial experience and honing his litigation skills while representing individuals in critical need of advocacy.
Tarras eventually moved into private practice, focusing on high-stakes federal cases. His work spans large-scale drug trafficking, healthcare fraud, securities fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, conspiracy, cybercrime, and sex crimes, with a particular emphasis on white-collar defense, healthcare, securities, and cryptocurrency-related matters.
In approaching cases, Tarras adopts a trial-focused strategy: he envisions how the case may ultimately unfold in court and works backward, ensuring that no detail is overlooked. This approach allows him to anticipate necessary motions, prepare thoroughly, and provide clients with comprehensive, strategic representation from every angle.
