so when i was um right out of uh
college i worked at the old first
interstate bank in nevada i was a
lending officer we didn’t have a law
school here in nevada yet and so i was
much more on the finance part
interestingly that was the days when
banks actually had their own in-house
local council
we would interact with them quite a bit
and
he encouraged me um to go back to law
school um because i
was very interested which some loan
officers weren’t in the actual loan
documents and why we were having people
sign the documents we were having them
sign
he encouraged me to go back to school
and so i left las vegas and went back to
law school and it’s really helped me
my
mba and my banking background
in dealing with banks no one knowing
creditor mentality
what goes on behind the scenes with
banks and my ability to read and review
debtors financial statements
in a bankruptcy which believe it or not
some bankruptcy attorneys cannot do
[Music]
my family i’m from a very large family
we moved here
in 1969 i have nine brothers and sisters
and
so we’ve been around the community quite
a bit
and growing up one of the things that my
father um who was a surgeon here in town
always said was this town has given so
much to us
and so we have a duty to give back and
so i’ve tried to keep that
and incorporate it with my legal career
and so i am presently now on the chair
of the client securities fund which is a
state organization a state bar
organization that
assesses and tries to reimburse clients
that have been
um
whose funds have been misappropriated by
um let’s just call them bad lawyers
and so before that i was on the actual
committee i’m the chair now so i’ve been
doing that for gosh eight nine years i’m
also on the legal aid pro bono board
and i’ve been doing that for probably
eight years as well which just assists
um legal aid legal aid of nevada in
deciding how to get out into the
community and get more lawyers involved
fundraising getting attorneys to take
pro bono cases
so it’s it’s a very worthy cause

Las Vegas, NV bankruptcy attorney Brigid M. Higgins talks about her background & experience as well as her service to the community. She shares that fresh out of college, she began her career at the old First Interstate Bank in Nevada as a lending officer. At that time, Nevada did not yet have a law school, so her work focused primarily on finance. Interestingly, during those days, banks maintained in-house local counsel, and she interacted with them frequently. One of the attorneys encouraged her to pursue law school after noticing her deep interest in the loan documents and the reasons behind them—an interest not shared by many loan officers.
She left Las Vegas to attend law school, and her MBA and banking background have proven invaluable in her legal career. Her experience provides insight into creditor perspectives, the inner workings of banks, and the ability to analyze debtors’ financial statements in bankruptcy cases—skills that some bankruptcy attorneys lack.
Her family roots run deep in the community. She comes from a large family, moving to Nevada in 1969 with nine siblings. Her father, a local surgeon, often emphasized the importance of giving back to the town that had given so much to them. Following that ethos, she has woven community service into her legal career. She currently chairs the Client Securities Fund, a state bar organization that reimburses clients whose funds have been misappropriated by unethical attorneys, a role she has held for eight to nine years after serving on the committee.
In addition, she serves on the Legal Aid Pro Bono Board, a position she has held for roughly eight years, supporting Legal Aid of Nevada by promoting community outreach, fundraising, and encouraging attorneys to take pro bono cases. Her dedication reflects a long-standing commitment to using her legal expertise to benefit both her clients and the broader community.
