the reason i became a lawyer is that
early in my career i was a burglar
alarms installer for a company that
installed burglar alarm systems
and i was on the roof of a large
operational plant in south carolina and
was electrocuted
and when i was electrocuted i saw how
injured workers got treated and i
decided right then and there that i
wanted to do something about that and so
i went to law school to become a lawyer
so that injured workers in north
carolina would not be treated the way i
was
i always tell my clients uh during the
process of the litigation that
they shouldn’t worry so much about the
value of their case
what they need to worry about during the
tenancy of their case is whether they’re
getting the proper medical care and
treatment that the workers compensation
act is designated to provide
and that sometimes is very difficult
sometimes they’re finding that they
aren’t given the right treatment or they
get the wrong diagnosis maybe the doctor
is being impatient with their recovery
and decides that they are ready to go
back to work when in fact they aren’t so
i try to get them to be patient about
their situation let me worry about their
circumstances
and let them focus on their medical care
and recovery

Charlotte, NC personal injury attorney John F. Ayers talks about why he became a lawyer and shares the one most frequent piece of advice he gives clients. He shares that he became a lawyer after an early career experience as a burglar alarm installer in South Carolina. While working on the roof of a large operational plant, he was electrocuted. Experiencing firsthand how injured workers were treated, he resolved then and there to make a difference. He went to law school to ensure that injured workers in North Carolina would not face the same treatment he endured.

He tells his clients that during the course of their litigation, they shouldn’t focus on the monetary value of their case. Instead, they should concentrate on receiving proper medical care and treatment, as the workers’ compensation system is intended to provide. He acknowledges that this can be challenging—sometimes clients receive inadequate treatment, incorrect diagnoses, or doctors prematurely declare them fit to return to work. He encourages his clients to be patient with their recovery, assuring them that he will handle the legal aspects while they focus on their health and rehabilitation.
