I became a lawyer because the law is the
00:06
one place where the playing field is
00:09
evened out everybody is equal before the
00:12
law we all know that but as a practical
00:14
matter our clients are people who have
00:18
disputes against much larger entities
00:21
their former employers those former
00:24
employers are more well-funded they have
00:27
their own lawyers and a lot of folks I
00:29
think are sometimes afraid that they
00:30
won’t be able to afford a lawyer that’s
00:32
not the case here we work on a
00:34
percentage basis our clients can afford
00:37
to have the fight against this larger
00:40
thing that is evening out the playing
00:42
field that’s what I like about the law
00:45
that’s why I became a lawyer and I like
00:47
to think that’s reflected in the
00:49
relationship that we have with our
00:51
clients there are two parts of my
00:57
practice that I find most rewarding the
00:59
first is that meeting with the client
01:02
where we decide that we’re going to work
01:04
together two things are happening right
01:06
there it’s exciting for me
01:08
professionally right it’s a new case and
01:10
although we specialize in employment law
01:12
and that’s 95 percent of what we do and
01:15
the law is usually the same thing over
01:17
and over every client is different the
01:20
facts of every case are different so
01:22
that’s exciting for me professionally
01:23
the other thing that’s exciting about
01:25
that first meeting is that the client
01:28
has put her trust or his trust in us
01:31
they found somebody who think they know
01:33
what they’re doing they have the
01:35
expertise the new client has said I
01:38
trust you to handle this for me that’s
01:40
great as well the second thing that I
01:43
find most rewarding in my practice is
01:45
resolving the case some cases have to be
01:48
resolved by trial but the truth of the
01:50
matter is that most don’t our clients
01:54
have been through something pretty rough
01:55
they’ve been fired they’ve been harassed
01:57
they’ve been denied money that’s owed
02:00
them these are just examples of what’s
02:02
happened it’s rough and what’s nice
02:05
about resolving a case by a settlement
02:08
is that even though it’s great to have a
02:11
jury say you were
02:13
I think it’s more rewarding for the
02:15
client and it’s often more rewarding for
02:17
me to have a settlement where the client
02:20
knows that the employer is in some way
02:23
acknowledging we made a mistake here we
02:26
didn’t treat you right here it’s
02:28
important and it’s rewarding for me and
02:31
I think very satisfying for the client a
02:37
piece of advice that I give to my
02:39
clients from the beginning and all the
02:41
way through is at the beginning hire
02:43
somebody you trust hire somebody who you
02:46
trust to give you honest feedback to
02:48
tell you the good and the bad but also
02:51
somebody who you trust to have the
02:52
expertise to get the job done right to
02:55
know what they’re doing
02:56
to have the ability to use their best
02:59
judgment to give you the best advice
03:01
hire someone you trust not just as a
03:04
person but as a professional the second
03:07
piece of advice that I’m always giving
03:08
to my clients is after you’ve hired
03:11
somebody you trust trust them to give
03:14
you good advice trust their judgment
03:17
asking questions that’s great giving
03:21
suggestions that’s great but at the end
03:23
of the day hire somebody who you trust
03:26
to take it all in and give you the best
03:28
advice on how to move forward

San Francisco, CA employment lawyer Jeremy Pasternak talks about why he became an attorney, the most rewarding aspect of his practice and his most common advice to clients.
