when preparing for an adjustment of
status
interview you have as a matter of course
already submitted some information and
some documents as supporting evidence
and so it is important for you to if you
haven’t already to familiarize yourself
with the content of that evidence that’s
number one number
two since filing your case some time has
passed and so the presumption is that
during that time you were able to gather
additional evidence that you can take
with you to the
interview and once you are at that
interview it is important for you to
listen carefully to the questions that
are being asked of you and so if a
question is asked and you do not know
the answer to that
question I counsel my clients to not
guess if you don’t know say I don’t
know that is important because not
knowing the answer to a question is fine
but misrepresenting or lying or
pretending to know the answer to a
question is worse and that is a big no
no finally I tell my clients to be
themselves as simplistic as it sounds it
is important for them to be themselves
uscis officers are not only trained to
look at the evidence in the record but
to also
analyze your body
language the chemistry that does or does
not exist between you and your
spouse so being yourselves being
comfortable being natural goes a long
way and in some ways I would argue is
even more important than a piece of
paper and a record showing that you have
a joint bank account and so those are
the things that I tend to remind my
clients of as we prepare to go to the
interview with them

Evanston, IL immigration attorney Alen Takhsh talks about how you should prepare for a marriage based adjustment of status interview. He advises that when preparing for an adjustment of status interview, applicants should approach the process with thoroughness and honesty. By this stage, supporting documents and evidence have already been submitted, making it essential to carefully review and familiarize oneself with the contents of that evidence.

He notes that time often passes between the initial filing and the interview date, during which applicants may have obtained additional documentation. Bringing such updated evidence to the interview strengthens the case. Once at the interview, he stresses the importance of listening carefully to each question. If an applicant does not know the answer, it is far better to respond honestly with “I don’t know” than to guess or misrepresent information. Misstatements, he warns, can be far more damaging than acknowledging a lack of knowledge.

Finally, he counsels his clients to simply be themselves. Beyond reviewing the documentation, USCIS officers are trained to observe demeanor, body language, and the natural interaction between spouses. Demonstrating authenticity, comfort, and sincerity can be just as significant—if not more—than presenting joint bank statements or other paperwork. In his experience, preparation combined with honesty and authenticity provides the strongest foundation for success at the interview.
