Well, one uh of the impactful litigation
cases that we handled that comes to mind
right away was a case with a young lady
who was still a minor. Her father was a
fire captain and he died. He had a life
insurance policy that he was not
carefully maintaining. This young lady
was also estranged from her mother. So
she was alone with a guardian and they
did not have a lot of resources other
than this life insurance policy. The
life insurance company had denied her
coverage based upon a technicality and
um we did not have a lot of information
about whether they were justified in
doing it this way or not. I mean
ostensibly they had the right. So, we
undertook her case because we felt
strongly about the situation and it was
one that was, you know, it pulled at the
heartstrings and we wanted to help this
young lady and uh we went to the
insurance company and filed the lawsuit
and we got all of their documents and of
course there were thousands of documents
which included all of their
correspondence. I remember my partners
and I spent the weekend here going
through all of those documents one by
one and preparing a very detailed
chronology of everything that happened.
And after we did that, we were able to
look at the situation and find the
places in which the insurance company
did not do the right thing. And we wrote
the insurance company a very thorough
demand letter based upon those documents
proving that this young lady had the
right to this coverage. And so, not only
did the insurance company then pay up on
the uh benefits that she had coming,
they also paid the attorney fees. And
so, she got all of those benefits and uh
we got paid our share. and she is living
happily ever after now. She’s able to go
to the school of her choice and she has
resources to support herself until she
becomes a a graduate and can earn her
own living. And it came out very well
for everyone and we were very happy to
help that young lady.
