Atlanta, GA criminal defense attorney Leigh S. Schrope shares the story of a memorable post conviction case she handled. She recalls that her most recent memorable post-conviction case was one that spanned several years. It began as an extraordinary motion for a new trial, which the trial court dismissed without granting a hearing. She then pursued a discretionary appeal to the Georgia Supreme Court, which reversed the trial court’s decision and instructed that her client was entitled to a hearing. Working closely with the newly formed Post-Conviction Integrity Unit in Fulton County, she was able to demonstrate that her client had indeed acted in self-defense, as he had always claimed. The unit ultimately agreed to grant him their first-ever exoneration.
