my experience is that
everyone involved
takes it very very seriously and that is
to say that the judges who hear the case
and trenton take it seriously
the lawyers who are involved
take it seriously
because in a way
it’s intellectual
i pause a little bit because it’s it’s
family law so it’s emotional and
important
um and actual and real
but it’s also intellectual
um in the sense that in the sense there
are legal issues involved
um there’s case law
involved and there’s precedent involved
so
for example
sometimes other people other lawyers
called amicus cure which are friends of
the court will get involved so from the
bar association or just other prominent
attorneys will file their own briefs
because
law
family lawyers like to particularly good
ones and experienced ones like to be
able to shape the law and influence the
law
as well as practicing law

Bradley Beach, NJ family law attorney Brian Winters talks about his experience in filing family law appeals. He points out that in his experience, everyone involved takes the process very seriously—the judges in Trenton who hear the cases, as well as the lawyers participating in them. While family law is deeply emotional, personal, and significant, he notes that it is also highly intellectual. Legal issues, case law, and precedent all play a central role, and at times, other attorneys, such as amici curiae or “friends of the court,” become involved by filing briefs on behalf of bar associations or as prominent practitioners seeking to contribute. He observes that skilled and experienced family lawyers are often motivated not only by the practice of law itself but also by the opportunity to shape and influence its development.
