Power of attorney is a really important document for most people. And I recommend it for anybody 18 years and over. The reason I recommend it is because most of our 18 year olds are travelling like we never did, and if you don’t have it then we typically need to petition for a conservatorship. Power of attorney is a document that allows you to assign your rights, your legal and financial rights, to one or two other individuals to step into your shoes and manage your finances, your day-to-day affairs, and also make legal decisions on your behalf if you’re either temporarily or permanently disabled, or if you do a lot of travel. So it’s a really handy document. It’s relatively inexpensive. It serves a number of purposes and it helps avoid a very, very costly situation that could result if you don’t have a power of attorney in place.

Minneapolis Estate Planning Attorney, Jacqueline Schuh, discusses the importance of a Power of Attorney.
