my advice to people thinking about
00:06
long-term care is
00:08
to start with simply think about it so
00:10
many people put off even considering
00:13
what that would look like to them or
00:15
what they should do about it because
00:16
it’s not a topic most people want to
00:18
think about we don’t want to think about
00:20
what’s going to happen when we’re old
00:22
and frail and unable to care for
00:24
ourselves so just spend some time
00:26
thinking about what you want
00:29
long-term care for you to look like and
00:32
then reach out to an attorney and
00:35
think about
00:36
how can we put that into practice so
00:38
when i’m meeting with a client who is
00:41
kind of coming to me early on we have a
00:44
lot more options to explore for what
00:47
what we can put in place to help achieve
00:49
whatever goals they have for long-term
00:50
care which is not to say that you
00:52
couldn’t come last minute when
00:54
somebody’s going in the nursing home
00:55
tomorrow i mean we do still have options
00:57
we help people in that position all the
00:59
time but i think if you have that option
01:01
the further out you can think about it
01:03
and come to us the more we’ll be able to
01:04
help you with that

St. Louis, MO estate & probate attorney Nikki Mitchell shares her advice for people concerned about their long-term care needs. She remarks that her advice to anyone considering long-term care is to start by simply thinking about it. Too many people delay even acknowledging the topic because it’s uncomfortable—no one likes to imagine growing old, becoming frail, or needing help to care for themselves. She encourages individuals to take the time to envision what they want their long-term care to look like and then speak with an attorney about how to make that vision a reality.

When she meets with clients early in the process, there are far more options available to plan effectively and structure solutions around their goals. That doesn’t mean last-minute situations are hopeless—her firm regularly assists families facing immediate nursing home placements or urgent care needs. Still, she believes that the earlier someone begins planning, the greater flexibility and control they’ll have, and the more her team can do to protect their wishes and resources.
