connecting with jurors is connecting
with somebody that you have no idea who
they are you cannot really do any
research
you cannot really look them up
you get a very um
short
window
to question them during the voidier
and if you have some
good young law clerks that know their
way around instagram and facebook you
would try to sometimes
look them up the prospective jurors to
see if you can flag the ones that are
the outliers
before you pick them into your jury but
you try to get as much information as
you can
from a juror about their personal life
in order to see if you can somehow
connect with them
with your own personal life if you learn
from a juror that they like certain
books or if they like gardening or they
like cars
you always have to find a little
connection with them and that way
there’s
potentially a chance that they will
listen to you more attentively
at the end of the day it’s their
decision
that will
decide your client’s case or the future
of your client so you have to do
whatever you can
in order to connect with them
and at least
try to make them like you
you

Chicago, IL commercial litigation attorney Gal Pissetzky explains his approach to connecting with jurors. He approaches connecting with jurors as a critical part of trial strategy. Jurors are initially strangers, and the opportunity to understand them is limited, often confined to the brief questioning period during voir dire. While social media research, when available, can provide additional insights, it is primarily about observing and gathering information during direct interaction.

He seeks to learn about jurors’ personal interests, backgrounds, and experiences to establish points of connection. Whether a juror enjoys books, gardening, or cars, finding a relatable link helps build rapport and encourages attentive listening. He recognizes that jurors ultimately decide the outcome of a case, making it essential to engage with them thoughtfully and professionally. Building a respectful connection enhances the likelihood that the jury will consider his client’s position carefully.
