Nashville, TN family law attorney George D. Spanos talks about whether a parent can be obligated to pay additional expenses beyond basic child support. He points out that in Tennessee, a parent may sometimes be responsible for expenses beyond basic child support. Routine expenses often include medical costs such as doctor’s bills, prescriptions, and other healthcare-related expenses, which are typically shared by the parents in proportion to their income. Extracurricular activities are also commonly assigned to parents based on agreement, specifying how much each parent will contribute. Additionally, if the parents have sufficient income or financial resources, the court may order children to continue attending private school, with one or both parents contributing to the associated costs.
