In order for a person to be granted
asylum, that person must be able to
prove that they were persecuted on
account of one of five particular
grounds. The particular grounds are
race, nationality, membership of a
particular social group, political
opinion, and religion. If a person can
prove that they have been persecuted on
one of those grounds and they’re in fear
of returning to their country, they can
be granted asylum.

Miami, FL immigration attorney Ruth Jean talks about what must be proved in order to be granted asylum. She mentions that to be granted asylum, a person must demonstrate that she has been persecuted based on one of five specific grounds: race, nationality, membership in a particular social group, political opinion, or religion. If she can show that she has experienced persecution on one of these grounds and fears returning to her home country, she may be eligible to receive asylum.
