Spousal support in Florida is awarded in a variety of circumstance. Spousal support is also called alimony and in Florida we have several different kinds. We have what’s called bridge the gap alimony for very short-term marriages, rehabilitative alimony in order to bring somebody back into the education or workforce to reestablish skills they’ve lost, durational alimony, which is the most common form now it’s for a set period of time and a set amount each month. And finally, we have permanent periodic alimony, which is generally only available in marriages that are longer than 17 years. All forms of support in Florida, spousal support presuppose a need on the part of the person requesting alimony and an ability to pay on the other side. If the party’s financial circumstances are relatively equal it doesn’t matter how long they’ve been married they’re not going to get alimony.
