Reform Act changed general term alimony

from being indefinite to having a set

term so depending on how long you were

married that’s how long the alimony in

your particular case may last zero to

five years would be 50 percent of the

marriage sixty percent of the marriage

would be up to 10 years

seventy percent of the marriage up to 15

years 80 percent up to 20 years and then

when you get to the 20-year mark That’s

when your alimony can last for an

indefinite period of time with the

caveat that that indefinite period of

time will end when the payor reaches

Social Security retirement age at that

point if you still need the alimony you

can always go to the court and ask for

them to extend it but generally alimony

is going to end when the payor turns 67

and a half or whatever the social

security retirement age is for that

particular individual
