Massachusetts alimony orders general
term alimony orders
last length of time based upon the
length of your marriage the alimony
Reform Act changed general term alimony
from being indefinite to having a set
term so depending on how long you were
married that’s how long the alimony in
your particular case may last zero to
five years would be 50 percent of the
marriage sixty percent of the marriage
would be up to 10 years
seventy percent of the marriage up to 15
years 80 percent up to 20 years and then
when you get to the 20-year mark That’s
when your alimony can last for an
indefinite period of time with the
caveat that that indefinite period of
time will end when the payor reaches
Social Security retirement age at that
point if you still need the alimony you
can always go to the court and ask for
them to extend it but generally alimony
is going to end when the payor turns 67
and a half or whatever the social
security retirement age is for that
particular individual
Hingham, MA family law attorney Carmela M. Miraglia discusses how long alimony orders typically last in Massachusetts.
