Immediately after law school, I actually went to London for a short time to work with a firm that specialized in buying and selling companies. And I worked with them to help kind of restructure some of their business deals at the time in real estate before coming back to the States and working with Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney where I worked in the real estate department, working for clients such as PNC, helping with microfinancing, helping with real estate lease reviews, and just lending in general. And I found that to be a great group of attorneys to learn from.

I moved from there to Dechert, which is headquartered in Philadelphia. It’s one of the preeminent law firms in the world. And they have one of the best finance and real estate departments in the world I would say. So I was privileged to be able to work with them and learn a great deal. And they handled some big deals at the time. I mean, we represented S&P, we represented Barclays, they did a lot of REIT work and syndication for real estate deals. While I was there, I believe they closed and I worked on one of the largest real estate financing syndication deals to date at that time. I want to say it was a billion-dollar deal that we helped out with at that time.

But I also got an opportunity to help with equity real estate investments, which is really one of the passions of mine. That also led me to Atlanta ultimately. I always wanted to come back to Atlanta, but when an opportunity at the best firm here at King & Spalding, which is another world-class law firm, opened up for me to help out with them in the real estate department and to do equity work, I jumped at the opportunity. And I knew I would be working with some of the best attorneys in the world. And I got a tremendous experience with regards to attention to detail, how to draft and really put your client’s best interest into the agreements, but at the same time take into account how you can add value for all sides in order to get the deal closed.

And so I rally kind of got my opportunity to fine-tune and hone my skills in legal drafting then. And we handled hundreds of millions of dollars of deals on a regular basis, closing real estate joint venture deals for example, representing equity investors, teaming up with developers, handling lending deals as well. And so it provided me with a great opportunity to kind of really get a firm grasp on the market deal terms as well as what is important to our clients on the investment side and the lending side.
